A short story about me

I'm an Aboriginal artist from the Waanyi tribe of North Queensland and my name is Burthumarr, meaning Brolga.

Painting professionally for 26 years I am never more grounded than when I am creating art and telling a story.

Storytelling through art has always been an important part of me although it wasn't until I joined the Aboriginal Art Group Black Cockatoo that I could see a way of making a career out of my love of culture, in those days I was based in Townsville.

My journey took flight when I created boomerangs and artifacts for the Sydney Olympics. For the past 22years I have called Adelaide home, teaching Aboriginal culture and history in over 60 schools.

My artwork is shown and collected worldwide. The largest mural I have painted is of the Rainbow Serpent, it spans 350 square meters and is on a ceiling. I have also created Indigenous gardens, sculptures and story poles.

Art connects me to my ancestors, heals my soul and awakens my spirit.
